Edward L. Asher
Executive Director
St. Andrew’s Lighthouse Inc.,
doing business as Gabriel
House of Care

Mission
Our mission is to help ease the financial, physical and emotional stresses that accompany serious illness by providing true hospitality in a caring, supportive atmosphere.

Serving Jacksonville
Corporation formed in 1996; began program operations in 2000. Jacksonville-based.

Those served
We provide services to patients of all Jacksonville hospitals, but primarily to Mayo Clinic Florida, Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital and the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute.

Biggest challenge
Traditionally, the biggest challenge is trying to meet the increasing need for our services in facilities that lack the necessary space and resources. Currently, the biggest challenge is preparing to expand into a much larger new facility, the Gabriel House of Care at Mayo Clinic, which will help solve the space constraints but is necessitating that we quadruple our infrastructure (staff, budget, development program, and related functions) in a very short period of time.

Biggest satisfaction
Being part of the exceptional local “care teams” for patients and families who travel to our city for specialized medical treatment and are away from home for weeks or even months.

Hometown
Branford, Conn.

First experience with community service
Chair for a previous employer’s March of Dimes campaign (about 30 years ago).

Your job before St. Andrew’s Lighthouse
Manager with The Prudential Insurance Co.

Upcoming events
Nov. 11: Homecoming 2010, a backyard barbecue to benefit the Gabriel House of Care, 6:30-9:30 p.m., St. Andrew’s Lighthouse, 1797 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville Beach, $75 per person, casual dress.
