Executive Director, Girls on the Run of Northeast Florida

Mission

To educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living.

Serving Jacksonville

Founded in 1996 in Charlotte, N.C.; opened in 2004 in Jacksonville.

Those served

Girls on the Run of Northeast Florida annually serves about 1,600 girls ages 8-13 throughout Baker, Clay, Duval, Flagler, Nassau and St. Johns counties as well as in the Waycross, Ga., area. It offers two seasons per year and uses more than 150 volunteer coaches each season to run the 10-week curriculum-based running program.

Biggest challenge

Getting everything done with only three staff members — one full-time and two part-time employees.

Biggest satisfaction

The positive energy that all the volunteers and girls generate each season; no matter how long the day is, that energy carries you.

Hometown

Carroll, Ohio (south of Columbus)

First experience with community service

Definitely not my first, but one of the most memorable — “Seniors for Seniors Day” during high school. We were matched with senior citizens from a local nursing home and spent the day at the county fair. We can learn so much from our elders.
