• Mayor John Delaney has appointed Denise K. Ostertag division chief of recreation activities in the Department of Parks, Recreation and entertainment. Ostertag is currently the manager of personnel services for the City’s Human Resources Division. The appointment is subject to City Council approval.

• The Jacksonville Housing Partnership will host Paint the Town in the 29th and Chase neighborhood May 4-11. For information, call 398-4424.

• First Alliance Bank has donated $5,000 to daniel as part of the Beth Sumner-Wiggins fund challenge. Rick Patrick, vice president of commercial banking, and Susan White, retail specialist, presented the check to Madison Shelly, vice president of development. The Sumner-Wiggins Endowment fund provides assistant to families who may not have the means to meet their needs. Also, daniel will host its annual yard sale today from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

• Bessent, Hammack and Ruckman, Inc. has been awarded the contract to build a Lowe’s Home Improvement store at the corner of Lenox Avenue and I-10. The contract includes a 180,000 square-foot store, including a 30,000 square-foot garden center.

• Live, free reading sessions of original classic music will be open to the public this month. As part of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra’s Fresh Ink competition, six Floridians have made the list of finalists. Only one of the composers will be selected to have their work performed by the JSO at the Fresh Ink 2002 Concert May 23, also free.

• The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will honor fallen police officers with its annual Police Memorial Day ceremony May 2 at 10:30 a.m. The two-hour event will take place at 501 E. Bay St.
