Planning Commission: Bearded Buffalo Brewing Co. granted exception to serve liquor

The Jacksonville Planning Commission approved a zoning exception Thursday to allow the Bearded Buffalo Brewing Co. at 1012 King St. in Riverside to serve alcohol for on-site consumption.

Owner Scott McAlister opened the brewery and restaurant with beer and wine service in early 2017.

His other businesses include the Phoenix Bar & Bowling on Blanding Boulevard; The Garage on Post Street; and The Loft, Rogue and Whiteway Deli & Tavern on King Street.

Christian Fellowship Baptist Church

The planning commission also approved a zoning exception for Christian Fellowship Baptist Church Ministries Inc., the owner of the vacant 3.35-acre property at 4820 Richard St., to use the property for a new church.

The church initially plans to build a 6,000-square-foot sanctuary with 144 seats, 49 parking spaces and the use of the existing pond for stormwater retention.

Future plans include construction of a 12,000-square-foot sanctuary, another 150 parking spaces and relocation of the pond to the northwest portion of the site.

The property is northwest of Interstate 95 and University Boulevard.

The exception was required for a property in the residential medium density-D zoning district which is less than 4 acres in size.

Land use amendments and rezoning recommendations

The planning commission recommended approval for land use changes and rezonings for:

• Ordinance 2019-274, which seeks a large scale land use amendment for 5.58 acres at Business Drive between Fort Caroline Road and Wompi Drive near the Southside Connector and I-295. Owner Buck Business Park LLC plans to change the land use on an undeveloped 5.58 acres from community/general commercial to medium density residential to allow D.R. Horton to develop 83 townhouses.

• Ordinance 2019-275, which seeks to rezone 11.89 acres on Faye Road and Longreene Road West, between I-295 and Faye Road. Property owner Frederick Bryan seeks a change from residential rural-acre to residential low density-60 for a single-family subdivision.

Land use amendments and rezonings require approval by the City Council Land Use and Zoning Committee and then full council approval.
