Planning director Calvin Burney leaving city job

Planning and Development Director Calvin Burney’s last day with the city is today after tendering his resignation earlier this month.

Burney, director since 2011, submitted a resignation letter to Mayor Alvin Brown on Feb. 9.

In the letter, he called working with Brown and Jacksonville citizens a “very rewarding experience” and he submitted the resignation “with much regret.”

Burney was Brown’s first planning director after being appointed to the $120,000 position in November 2011. He was confirmed by council in January 2012. His salary is $135,000.

City spokeswoman Kristen Sell in an email said Burney was a “great asset” to the city.

“His hard work is appreciated,” said Sell. “We wish him luck in his future endeavors.”

Burney served on Brown’s transition team was a member of the Transportation Transition Committee.

Prior to his city service, he was president and CEO of Transportation Planning Group Inc., a consulting firm specializing in transportation and land-use planning.

Folks Huxford is serving as the acting Planning and Development director. The department manages existing and future development and administers local, state and federal funds for housing and community development in the city.
