Alan Mosley is the president of Kloss, Mosley & Associates, Inc.

WHAT DOES HE DO?

Civil engineering and design, construction management services and client maintenance for the public and private sectors since he opened his doors in 1999. “Clients hire me to monitor the progress [of the contractor] and certify that the work was completed the way it should have been. My expertise is in utilities, water and sewer. My partner’s is in roadways.”

EDUCATION

A licensed professional engineer, Mosley is currently attending Jacksonville University to obtain a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

WHY GO INTO THE FIELD?

“I started with the City in 1974 as a blueprint operator and got acquainted with it. It became a passion for me.”

IN THE TRENCHES

Appointed to positions by four Jacksonville mayors, Mosley worked until retirement in the Public Works Department. First, he was an engineering technician in the Water Services Division, then division chief of the Utilities Engineering Division and lastly as division chief/city engineer for the Engineering Division. Mosley served briefly as vice president of water and sewer engineering at JEA before becoming senior vice president of client services at St. Johns Engineering.

WHAT’S REWARDING ABOUT YOUR JOB?

“Seeing things accomplished; taking things from a concept, framing them up and putting legs under them.”

WHAT’S THE CHALLENGE?

“No matter how much you plan and think you’ve got it figured out, when you break ground, invariably there’s something you hadn’t thought of, especially when you do retrofit [work on existing roadways]. Then you need to get out there with the contractor and troubleshoot for problems.”

HOMETOWN

Jacksonville.

FAMILY

Mosley resides on the Southside with his wife Reneé and their three small children, Morgan, Carly and Nicholas.

PROFESSIONAL AND CIVIC AFFILIATIONS

Florida Engineering Society, American Public Works Association, Florida Water Resources Association and the National Society of Professional Engineers make up his work-related memberships. Mosley is also active in his Sans Souci neighborhood association, Jacksonville Community Council, Inc. and All Saints Episcopal Church.

HOBBIES

Mosley enjoys running, camping, canoeing and taking a stroll through St. Augustine. When dining out, it’s Sorrento Italian Restaurant; at home, he tunes in “Ally McBeal.” His favorite film is “Little Big Man” and “Running from Safety” tops his book list.

WHO’S YOUR HERO?

“Robert F. Kennedy. I would listen to his speeches as a kid — the connection he had and the inclusiveness of his dialogue. He advocated not leaving anybody behind in the American Dream.”

HIS FIFTEEN MINUTES

Mosley ran for City Council in District 4 back 1999 and is contemplating doing so again. “I will probably run again at some time. I am focusing on building my business right now.”
