Republic Services held a grand opening ceremony Tuesday for its newly constructed regional recycling center in Northwest Jacksonville that will use advanced sorting capabilities for quicker returns.

Magnets, screens and optical sorters, in addition to workers, will assist in recycling at the 70,000-square-foot center.

The facility’s opening also added 30 local jobs with an annual payroll of about $775,000.

Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll, Florida Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Herschel Vinyard, Mayor Alvin Brown and City Council member Denise Lee were among the officials who attended the “flipping of the switch” ceremony that signified the plant’s production and took part in guided tours.
