Second round of city senior, disability assistance begins Aug. 29

Applicants must be at least 72 years old or receive Social Security disability benefits.

The city of Jacksonville announced Aug. 17 it is launching the second round of its Senior and Disabled Financial Assistance Program at 8 a.m. Aug. 29.

The program will provide 3,000 one-time, $300 payment cards to senior citizens age 72 or older or those receiving Social Security disability benefits. 

Only applications submitted by phone or online will be accepted. The grants are provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Applications will be reviewed before the payment cards will be distributed. The card will be mailed to the applicant if they qualify.

The cards can be used for purchases and cannot be used at an ATM or to get cash back at a retailer’s register.

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Reside in Duval County.

• Certify that they did not receive funds from the city’s VyStar Small Business Assistance Program; Employee Retention Loan Program; Mortgage, Rent, and Utilities Relief Program; or the first round of the Senior and Disabled Financial Assistance Program.

• Either be at least 72 years old or receive Social Security disability benefits.

• Have experienced either a reduction in income or an increase in expenses because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

• The applicant’s adjusted gross income must not exceed $30,000 in 2019.

• Applicants may receive only one card per household.

• Applicants must provide their birth date and the last four digits of their Social Security number.

Accounts can be created at the MyJax portal, but the application process will not begin until 8 a.m. Aug. 29.

The first round of the program launched June 20 with 3,300 cards distributed.
