Six months in: Unemployment rate soars as jobs disappear

Since the start of the year, there has been a 10% drop in jobs in the area.

Metro Jacksonville started the year at a record low unemployment rate, which soared into double-digits within months to rival its reach in 2010.

The number of jobs in Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties dropped by 71,600 – almost 10% - from year-end 2019 to May, the latest numbers available. 

The number of people looking for work rose by 61,442 – a four-fold increase.
