With a possible eye on a special election, three St. Johns County Republicans have opened campaign accounts to try to succeed Rep. Ronald “Doc” Renuart, R-Ponte Vedra Beach, in House District 17, according to the state Division of Elections website.

Renuart easily won another term Tuesday, but he plans to run in a special election for a Senate seat if, as expected, Sen. John Thrasher, R-St. Augustine, is confirmed this week as the next president of Florida State University.

If Renuart runs for the Senate, that would lead to a special election in his Northeast Florida House district.

During the past week, Republicans Cyndi Stevenson and John Capra opened campaign accounts to run in the House district, and Republican Michael Davis took the same step last month.

hough the accounts were opened for the 2016 election, they could be shifted to a special election.

Also widely believed to be considering a run for Thrasher’s Senate seat is Rep. Travis Hutson, R-Elkton. He is the only candidate with an open campaign account in House District 24.
