The Jacksonville Women Lawyers Association gathered for lunch at River City Brewing Company last week to hear Nancy Hogshead-Makar talk about Title IX.

Hogshead-Makar is a Florida Coastal School of Law professor and former Olympic swimmer. She is an expert on Title IX, a 1972 amendment that attempts to create equal school sports opportunities for women.

“You will not find anyone anyone who will say they don’t like Title IX,” said Hogshead-Makar. “But they will go on to say Title IX has gone too far and it’s taking opportunities away from boys.”

She said a clarification recently issued by the Department of Education threatens Title IX. The clarification allows schools to assess student interest in sports with an e-mail survey. Hogshead-Makar said the survey allows schools to falsely claim that they are meeting female students’ needs.
