Vision being refined for remodeled Winn-Dixie

Southeastern Grocers LLC expects to unveil its renovated Winn-Dixie store in Baymeadows next year, but hasn’t said what the $3 million project will include.

“We are continuing to refine our vision for the use of this space, and best interests of our customers are at the center of every option under consideration,” said a statement Friday from the Jacksonville-based company.

Southeastern Grocers issued the statement after the city approved the permit Thursday for the renovation. Rockford Construction Co., with offices in Michigan and Florida, is the contractor that will rebuild the interior of the almost 46,000-square-foot store at 10915 Baymeadows Road.

The store opened in 2003 and closed in 2010 a cost-cutting move. It sits near Stein Mart in the Point Meadows shopping center near Interstate 295.

Southeastern Grocers demolished the interior of the store in October, sparking questions whether the company is designing a new prototype for its legacy Winn-Dixie banner.

The company said more than 30 years, including extension options, remain on the lease.

The statement said the lease “opens up a wide range of options and considerations for the space.”

The property is near residential, retail and office growth spurred in part by its proximity to St. Johns Town Center. IKEA has announced it will open at Gate Parkway and I-295, not far from Point Meadows.

Plans for the Winn-Dixie renovations indicate the general sales area and restrooms will total 33,000 square feet. Uses for the remaining space include offices, an employee lounge and deli, bakery, meat and produce prep areas.
