The University of North Florida and OneJax, a UNF institute, will honor six business and community leaders April 27 at the 2017 Humanitarian Awards Dinner at the Prime Osborn Convention Center.
Receiving awards will be David A. Stein, Gold Medallion for Lifetime Achievement; Jean Ludlow, President’s Citation; Sabeen Perwaiz-Syed, Acosta-Rua Young Professional’s Award; and Silver Medallions will be awarded to Jim Crooks, Rodney L. Hurst Sr. and Shah Faisal Sayed.

The Players brings jobs, donations to Northeast Florida
Jared Rice, executive director of The Players golf tournament, said he continues to work closely with the city and JAX Chamber to promote and showcase Northeast Florida.
The event returns May 9-14 to the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass. Last year, 213,000 fans, business executives and media worldwide attended.
Rice spoke Tuesday about the economic impact of the tournament at the “Teeing Up for Business” news conference at the JAX Chamber.
“Overall, 400 local, national and international businesses utilize the tournament to entertain clients, build relationships and network. Our Showcase of Excellence and continued growth is made possible by the continued support of the Jacksonville community,” Rice said.
The Players partners with more than 350 local businesses, creates nearly 2,000 jobs during the tournament and invests back into the community.
Proceeds from The Players total more than $84 million since the event moved to Ponte Vedra Beach in 1977, including a record $8.5 million generated in 2016.
In April 2011, The Players committed to generate $50 million for youth-related charities over 10 years.
JaxPort expands service to Asia with Hamburg Sud
JaxPort announced last week that it now offers expanded service to Asia through Hamburg Sud’s new Asia-North America East Coast rotation.
JaxPort’s Blount Island Marine Terminal serves as the last port of call for the new service, which is offered through the 2M Alliance.
JaxPort said vessels in the rotation offer direct service from Jacksonville to Busen in South Korea as well as Qingdao, Xingang, Shanghai and Ningbo in China. SSA Marine provides stevedoring services at Blount Island.
JaxPort said the Asian container trade continues to be the fastest growing segment of its container cargo business, growing by 19 percent in 2016.
JaxPort said it offers worldwide cargo service from more than 40 ocean carriers, including direct service to Asia, Europe, South America, the Caribbean and other key markets.
Promotions, hiring at Brunet-Garcia
Winning a 10-year contract to provide national health marketing services for the Centers of Disease Control has resulted in hiring and promotions at Brunet-Garcia Advertising.
Promotions include Aerien Mull to associate creative director and Katy Garrison to creative group head.
Hires include Eduardo Sarmiento as creative director and vice president; Cassie Deogracia as art director; Bruce Cooke as user experience designer/developer; Denise Reagan as senior manager of public relations; and Natalie Spindle as PR and social media specialist.
Communities In Schools event tonight
Communities In Schools Jacksonville, backed by at least eight Jacksonville companies and supporters, will present its “Rising Stars!” event tonight, with WJXT TV-4 anchor Vic Micolucci as master of ceremonies.
The event is 6-9 p.m. at the Florida Theatre at 128 E. Forsyth St.
It begins with a cocktail hour, followed by a silent auction and then the student talent show at 7 p.m.

Jaxsons Night Market returns tonight
Jaxsons Night Market opens the 2017 season from 5-9 p.m. today, its third anniversary after the 2014 One Spark crowdfunding festival.
The market has moved from Hemming Park to The Court Urban Food Park along Hogan Street between Independent Drive and Bay Street.
Tonight’s anniversary will feature a block party along Hogan Street, next to the SunTrust Building’s parking garage.
The event takes place Downtown on the third Thursday of the month to complement the first Wednesday Art Walk.
Jaxsons showcases a vendor list that includes local farmers, street food vendors and artisans producing handmade food products, clothing and household goods.
Visitors can purchase groceries from local farmers and ranchers, clothing or household decorative items and also buy craft beer and food from street vendors to consume on-site.
Founder Mike Field said the market is an incubator for small business owners and that 15 vendors have gone on to open brick and mortar locations.
That makes “Jaxsons a powerful business incubator that allows aspirational, small business owners to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams,” Field said.
England joins Weis Markets
William England, a former management team member for Jacksonville-based Southeastern Grocers, joined Weis Markets as vice president of asset protection. At Weis Markets, based in Sunbury, Pa., he will oversee day-to-day management of shrink and risk management, workplace safety, quality assurance, insurance and workers’ compensation. At Southeastern Grocers, he was on the team responsible for the banner transitions for Harveys, Fresco y Mas and Winn-Dixie stores in South Carolina, North Carolina and Florida.
