A new wing of Morning Star School in Arlington was dedicated Friday by Bishop Felipe Estévez of the Diocese of St. Augustine.

The $1.5 million project adds four classrooms each for the middle school and new high school, and a media technology center.

Morning Star School, at 725 Mickler Road, serves students who have a diagnosed learning disability. While Morning Star is a Catholic school, 90 percent of its students are non-Catholic.

“There are few special education high schools in our city,” said principal Jean Barnes. “This is a long-awaited moment for the school, and for parents who have few options for their children with learning disabilities.”

The wing is named in honor of Archbishop Joseph P. Hurley, who founded the school in 1956.

“What an amazing and joyous occasion for everyone who has worked so hard to conceptualize and shape what was once just a dream,” Barnes said. “Our success in adding a Morning Star high school program is inspiring and critically needed — an exciting milestone in our 60-year history of teaching children with disabilities.”

JU business program ranked by U.S. News

The Jacksonville University Davis College of Business has been ranked for the first time by U.S. News and World Report for its  part-time FLEX Master of Business Administration program.

Rankings are based on three main criteria: quality assessment, placement success and student selectivity.

“This is the first time that we have compiled the necessary sets of data to submit for the ranking, and we debuted at 204 out of 1,000 part-time MBA programs,” said Don Capener, business dean. “U.S. News is the preeminent source for rankings of this type.”

To be eligible for the part-time ranking, the program needed to be accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International and have at least 20 students enrolled part-time in fall 2016, based on statistical data reported to U.S. News in fall 2016 and early 2017.

JU wasn’t the only area business school ranked by U.S. News. The Coggin College of Business at the University of North Florida was ranked No. 215.

The JU Davis FLEX MBA allows professionals to complete their MBAs, usually in two years, through evening and weekend classes once per week.
