By the end of 2018, Baptist Medical Center South will grow to 1 million square feet of space on its campus.

Currently, three hospital towers, two medical office buildings and two parking garages occupy nearly 33 acres at 14534 Old St. Augustine Road.

More is underway or about to be.

Baptist South will add a third medical office building for physician offices and additional outpatient services.

The Jacksonville-based health care organization expects to start construction in October and complete it within a year to accommodate area growth.

The city is reviewing plans for the four-story, 100,000-square-foot medical office building. The architect is Gresham Smith and Partners and the civil engineer is England, Thims & Miller Inc.

When campus construction is completed, Baptist South will have four hospital towers, adding the capacity to grow to 407 beds.

There are 269 beds now.

The fourth tower under construction, for completion in February, will open with a 24-bed medical-surgical unit and nine additional suites for maternity care. When built out, the new tower will house 138 beds.

Hospital President Nicole Thomas said the tower will add two operating room suites, bringing the total to eight, and shelled space will be available for up to 10 more OR suites.

A second parking garage, with 1,200 free parking spaces for patients and visitors, was completed in July.

Thomas said Baptist South wants to “continue to be the health care provider of choice in our area.”

“These additions reflect our commitment to meet the growing health care needs of the community.”

The hospital campus opened in 2005 with two five-story patient towers and one medical office building.
