Help ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ with food drive on Saturday
The National Association of Letter Carriers’ 25th anniversary Stamp Out Hunger food drive is Saturday.
The community can participate by leaving a paper or plastic bag filled with non-perishable food items near their mailbox.
Letter carriers will collect the bags and bring them to the post office, where volunteers and the Feeding Northeast Florida food bank will sort and distribute the food.
Most-needed items are peanut butter, canned vegetables, canned meat, canned fruit and granola bars.
Last year, mail carriers, with cooperation from the U.S. Postal Service, collected almost 300,000 pounds of food in the Jacksonville area.
Along with donations, Feeding Northeast Florida is seeking volunteers to work at Jacksonville post offices. Visit feedingnefl.org/nalc and fill out the volunteer form, or register by calling (904) 830-4379.
More than 283,000 Northeast Florida residents go to bed hungry every night.
The Stamp Out Hunger food drive is one of many annual Feeding Northeast Florida initiatives.
In 2016, the organization distributed 12.3 million meals through 160 community partners including food pantries and religious organizations.

ElderSource hosts ‘A Night with the Stars’ on June 3
ElderSource is hosting its fourth annual A Night with the Stars gala on June 3 from 7-10 p.m.
The fundraiser will feature a “Crooners, Cars & Cocktails” theme, with WJCT Studios transformed into an elegant club with an orchestra, dancing and a light buffet presented by Blue Bamboo restaurant.
The event raises money to support seniors in critical need and to provide resources and services to families and the community.
As part of the festivities, Kenneth Tannenbaum will receive the 2017 Delores Barr Weaver Elder Advocate Award.
Tannenbaum serves as chair of the Baptist AgeWell Institute Community Advisory Council, is a founder of the Coalition to End Senior Hunger in Northeast Florida and is a member of the ElderSource Institute board.
“As an octogenarian myself, I have been blessed with so much and, frankly, it disturbs me a great deal to see people my age — and older and younger — living a life with limited quality. Many of our elders need a great deal of what I’d regard as basic necessities and they deserve better,” Tannenbaum said.
The event is supported by the Delores Barr Weaver Forever Event Fund and sponsored by Swisher International, Florida Blue, Brooks Rehabilitation, Blue Bamboo, BDO and Mutual of America.
Tickets are $100 per person or $1,200 for a table for eight. They include the buffet, entertainment and parking.
For tickets and sponsorship info, visit myeldersource.org or call (904) 608-3823.

Themed “Showered With Love,” the event was hosted by Furyk and his wife, Tabitha.
Each expectant mom received a “Shower in a Box” containing gifts donated by companies including Chicco and Ellie Sparkles.
Special guests at the shower included retired U.S. Navy Vice Adm. Sean Pybus and his wife, Patty; Navy Capt. Sean Haley and his wife, Annamarie; and Kayla Williams, director of the Center for Women Veterans at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
