JEA is asking for contractor bids to demolish the St. Johns River Power Park.
On Monday, JEA and Florida Power & Light, co-owners of the coal-fired plant at 11201 New Berlin Road, were given Florida Public Service Commission approval to close the plant by Jan. 5.
A public notice published Monday calls for a two-step bid process.
First, the utility is asking companies to submit qualification packages by Oct. 10 to be included in a list. JEA then will evaluate each company on a pass or fail basis.
Companies that meet the requirements will be allowed to submit an all-inclusive bid with pricing and the scope of work.
Those bids are due by Oct 31.
According to the JEA description, the contract will include demolishing equipment and structures at the power park, as well as the removal of regulated materials, the remediation of any contaminated soil and the restoration of the site to an industrial standard.
According to JEA’s request for bid, companies will need to have completed at least one similar project within the past five years and have a current general contractor’s license.
JEA owns an 80 percent interest in the plant that has been open since the 1980s. The first of two turbine generators began commercial operation in March 1987.
The 1.43 million-square-foot facility includes 46 single- and multistory buildings spread across 1,600 acres. The site also includes two 460-foot cooling towers, and a 640-foot concrete stack.
According to the News Service of Florida, Florida Power and Light will pay JEA $90.4 million to close the plant.
