The Florida Times-Union on Thursday announced the elimination of about 24 positions in the advertising, circulation, newsroom, accounting and administration departments.
The cut affects about 10 percent of the paper’s nonproduction workforce, said Mark Nusbaum, president of the Times-Union, in a statement on its website.
About 10 employees were told on Thursday that their positions had been eliminated, the statement said.
In December, the newspaper said it would eliminate more than 50 production positions and move the printing of the paper to Gainesville and Daytona Beach in February.
“The combined reductions are in response to declining print revenues, particularly from major and national retailers, that have plagued the newspaper industry throughout the country,’’ Nusbaum said.
“We hope that this reset will put us on a long-term path to financial success,” he said.
GateHouse Media bought the Times-Union, along with 10 other daily newspapers previously owned by Morris Publishing Group, in October for $120 million. GateHouse says it publishes 130 daily newspapers and more than 640 community publications. Staff cuts often have followed GateHouse acquisitions.
“Our primary focus in the newsroom will continue to be watchdog reporting – including of local government and criminal justice issues – compelling storytelling and comprehensive local sports coverage,” Editor Mary Kelli Palka said in the statement.
