Six names of local armed service members who died while on active duty in the past year have been added to the Veterans Memorial Wall as part of the city’s annual Memorial Day observance.
The ceremony will begin at 8 a.m. Monday at the monument near TIAA Bank Field.
The Jacksonville Pipes and Drums and Jacksonville Young Men’s Chorus will perform and a flyover by Air Force jets is scheduled.
Keynote speakers are Rear Adm. Sean Buck, commanding officer of the U.S. 4th Fleet, and city Chief of Staff Brian Hughes.
The ceremony will be conducted rain or shine and the area around the wall and eternal flame will be covered by a tent. Bottled water will be provided and free parking is available in Lot J along Gator Bowl Boulevard and Lot P along Duval Street.
Patriotic attire is suggested.
Jacksonville’s Veterans Memorial Wall was installed in 1995. At 65 feet long, is the second-largest veterans memorial in the U.S., only behind the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C.
It has inscribed upon it the names of nearly 1,700 local service members who died while on active duty since World War I.
