Publix Super Markets Inc. will renovate more stores in South, North and Southwest Jacksonville. Elkins Construction LLC is the contractor.

Publix wants to remodel its Kernan Square store at 12620 Beach Blvd. at a cost of $800,000. The 52,724-square-foot store was built in 1998.

The city issued permits Oct. 11 for Elkins Construction to renovate the Publix at 731 Duval Station Road at a cost of $975,000 and the store at 9518 Argyle Forest Blvd. at $900,000.

Both the 48,830-square-foot Duval Station store and the 49,600-square-foot OakLeaf Plantation Center supermarket were developed in 2003.

Also, landlord Regency Centers Corp. proposes to renovate the facade of the Publix store at 11250 Old St. Augustine Road.

Lakeland-based Publix has renovated, rebuilt or filed plans to do so for more than 20 area locations in recent years.

It has a remodel program in which every store is assessed on a designated rotation of years based on a location’s needs.

Publix, which opened its first Jacksonville stores in the 1970s, also is building in new markets and shopping centers.

The landscape has changed with relative newcomers Aldi, Earth Fare, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods Market, Walmart Neighborhood Markets and, next year, Sprouts Farmers Market.

Winn-Dixie, Harveys, Save-A-Lot and Fresh Market also have been upgrading or adding stores.
