Gunnel Humphreys, who has worked at Edge City in Five Points every day since she and her late husband, Tom McCleery, bought the small store in 1975, is retiring and plans to sell the Jacksonville retail landmark.
“I am turning 80 in 2024. I should quit while I can still walk out,” Humphreys said June 5.
She said she has multiple potential buyers for the shop that has evolved over the years from selling posters, incense and rolling papers to offering exclusive designer fashions Humphreys selects from boutique vendors in Canada, Greece and Spain.
Humphreys was the 2021 Jacksonville Daily Record Top Entrepreneur Legend.
She said several people are interested in buying the store, at 1017 Park St., and she is considering her options.
“But it’s not a done deal yet. I’ll let you know.”
Nothing will change at the store until at least January, she said, when the transition is expected to begin. Humphreys said she plans to remain nearby after the store changes ownership.
“I am ready to have a little more freedom, but I will stay in the neighborhood. My plan is to sell my condo and move into Presbyterian Apartments, if they will have me,” Humphreys said.
