JaxPort spokeswoman Nancy Rubin said the previous largest to visit Jacksonville was an 8,800-container vessel in 2015.

The MOL Bravo came through the Suez Canal from Asia before reaching the U.S. East Coast.

Rubin said the MOL Bravo was loading and unloading cargo before leaving for its next call on the port in Charleston, South Carolina, before returning to Asia.

JaxPort offers direct trade with Asian ports through both the Panama and Suez canals.

It said the world’s three largest ocean carrier alliances, which dominate Asian trade with the U.S., offer service through JaxPort.

The port has recorded an average 21 percent annual growth in Asian container volumes during the past five years.

JaxPort, which wants to deepen the 40-foot depth of the St. Johns River shipping channel, said the ship wasn’t able to operate at full capacity in Jacksonville.

It said the federal project to deepen the channel to 47 feet to accommodate more cargo aboard the largest ships is set to begin construction by early 2018.

Rubin said the TraPac terminal general manager estimated that at a river channel depth of 47 feet, the Bravo would have delivered and picked up twice as many containers in Jacksonville.
