City notes: Mark Frisch, Menla English Hulsey join Wolfson board

Mark Frisch and Menla English Hulsey have joined the Wolfson Children’s Hospital board of directors.

Frisch is executive vice president of Beaver Street Fisheries Inc. and owner of the new Armada team with the North American Soccer League franchise slated to start play in 2015.

Hulsey has served in leadership roles for organizations such as the American Cancer Society, Victory Board, United Way and Safe Harbor, and became a Wolfson supporter when her son, Ben, was diagnosed prenatally with a severe and rare congenital heart defect.

Jim Lima appointed tax roll manager

Property Appraiser Jim Overton has appointed Jim Lima as the county’s new tax roll manager.

The position is responsible for ongoing internal analysis of tax roll data for real and tangible property accounts, county compliance with state reporting requirements and, ultimately, the certification of the annual tax roll.

More than 350,000 real estate parcels and 31,000 tangible personal property accounts are maintained for Duval County for property taxes. Lima has served as chief of the Land Records Division since 2009.

Series on Muslim journeys concludes March 30

The Jacksonville Public Library’s five-part “Muslim Journeys: Let’s Talk About It” series wraps from 2-4 p.m. March 30 at the Southeast Regional Library, Room B.

The series will conclude with a scholar-led book discussion about “Rumi: Poet and Mystic” with Tarah Trueblood, Interfaith Center director at the University of North Florida. The grant-funded event is available through a partnership with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UNF, the Interfaith Center, the Islamic Center of Northeast Florida and OneJax.

Clean fuels working groups forming

The North Florida Clean Fuels Coalition is forming working groups in the coming weeks to identify projects to include in the Alternative Fuels Master Plan for potential investment.

The first few scheduled are March 21 at 9 a.m. for propane, 1 p.m. natural gas and 3 p.m. for hydrogen. One week later March 28, a discussion about electricity begins at 9 a.m. and a biofuels meeting is at 1 p.m. All meetings are at the North Florida Transportation Planning Organization, 1022 Prudential Drive. MOSH presents coffee workshop

Coffee starts the day for many people — now drinkers and others interested in how the brew goes from plant to cup can learn how.

The Museum of Science and History will have a “MOSH After Dark: Coffee Workshop with Bold Bean Coffee Roasters” program at 6:30 p.m. March 27.

The latest series of adult programs for the museum will feature the “roastmasters” of Bold Bean Coffee Roasters talking about how to brew a perfect cup of coffee. Cost is $20; museum members receive a 20 percent discount. Register at themosh.org.

Florida State College at Jacksonville conference on March 25

The Florida State College at Jacksonville 25th International Conference on College Teaching and Learning will be March 24-28. The first two days will be at the college’s Deerwood Center, with the last three days at the Sawgrass Marriott.

The theme is “Looking to the Future.” The keynote lunch speaker March 26 will be novelist and scholar Jed Rubenfield, who will address “Shaping Your Future Without Giving Up.”

Theoretical physicist and Michio Kaku will be the lunch keynote speaker March 27 on the topic of “The Future of the Mind: The Scientific Quest to Understand, Enhance and Empower the Mind.” Public admission to the workshops and luncheons is $75 each. Back to the gridiron

A group called Gridiron Alumni is planning several full-contact alumni football games between local high schools this spring and is looking for former players to again put on the pads.

The group is targeting players on teams like Englewood, Sandalwood, Jackson, Mandarin and others interested in playing, with all local players invited to register. The team that has 30 people registered first receives home field advantage.
