El Jefe restaurant in Murray Hill closing April 28

It opened in 2018 offering Tex-Mex fare in the former Curry-Thomas Hardware store.

El Jefe Tex-Mex restaurant announced April 26 it will close April 28 after dinner service.

Until then, it is open 4:30-9:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 4:30-9 p.m. Sunday, according to its website.

The Tex-Mex restaurant at 947 Edgewood Ave. S. in Murray Hill opened in summer 2018. It took over and renovated the former Curry-Thomas Hardware store.

The building is owned by GLocal Lee LLC in Doral.

“It is with heavy hearts that we make this announcement,” Scott Schwartz, chef and co-owner, said in a news release.

We would like to thank the wonderful community of Murray Hill and all of our customers for their support.”

Ownership declined to give a reason for the closure. 

El Jefe features Tex-Mex cuisine, specializing in puffy tacos and freshly made margaritas.

Schwartz previously owned 29 South Restaurant in Fernandina Beach.

He was part of the Bullbriar Restaurant LLC group that had planned to operate in the Marble Bank building Downtown after it was renovated. The group dissolved the LLC in 2020.
