The renovation for Downtown’s Jessie Ball duPont Center has been going on behind closed doors and plywood up to this point, but next week, the project will be visible along the sidewalks around the former Haydon Burns Public Library.
Construction barricades are scheduled to be installed along Adams, Forsyth and Ocean streets to make way for the removal of the windows from the building, said Bret Anderson, project superintendent for Danis, the general contractor.
Some of the glass is not tempered and will be safely shattered and removed from the site. Other windows are made of tempered glass and will be removed intact.
All the building’s 50-year-old windows will be replaced with modern energy-efficient glazing.
Anderson said the interior demolition is almost finished, including removal of asbestos and lead paint, two common building materials in the 1960s.
Removal of the windows also will make way for deliveries of structural steel to begin the next phase of the project, the interior build-out.
Mary Kress Littlepage, duPont Center spokeswoman, said the design for the interior will be finalized by May 1. The ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the building as the new home of the Jessie Ball duPont Fund and other local nonprofit organizations is scheduled June 24, 2015.
“The clock is ticking,” said Anderson.
