Shake Shack in construction at St. Johns Town Center

The city issued a permit April 15 for the New York City-based burger chain to replace the closed M Shack.

Shake Shack is converting the closed M Shack at St. Johns Town Center now that the city issued a permit April 15 for the $1.3 million project.

RCC Associates Inc. of Deerfield Beach is the contractor for the conversion at 10281 Midtown Parkway, No.101, at the Southside shopping center. BAI Architecture Inc. of Boston is the architect.

M Shack closed March 17 after its lease expired. It opened in St. Johns Town Center in late 2013.

Shake Shack Jacksonville No. 1492, as it is called on the permit, will be 4,258 square feet comprising 3,136 square feet of inside space and 1,122 square feet of patio space.

Plans show 117 seats, comprising 87 inside and 30 outside.

Shake Shack Brand Communications Specialist Kate DeMarco said April 16 she did not have details about when the location will open.

It says it serves “elevated versions” of made-to-order Angus beef burgers, crispy chicken, hand-spun milkshakes, housemade lemonades and more.

“With its fresh and simple, high-quality food at a great value, Shake Shack is a fun and lively community-gathering place with widespread appeal,” the company says on its website.

Shake Shack Inc.’s 2023 annual report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission says that since the original Shack opened in 2004 in NYC’s Madison Square Park, the company has expanded to 518 Shacks in operation, with 295 domestic company-operated, 39 domestic licensed and 184 international licensed across London, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore, Mexico City, Istanbul, Dubai, Tokyo, Seoul and more. 

There are 21 in Florida, the closest in Orlando. While those generally open at 11 a.m., closing time varies by location.

Plans show the Jacksonville Shake Shack will seat 87 inside and 30 outside.

M Shack, led by chefs Matthew and David Medure, has one remaining location at 641 Crosswater Parkway in Nocatee.

It offers beef burgers, beef hot dogs, hand-cut fries, sandwiches, hot dogs, salads, sides and shakes, including spiked shakes, beer and wine.

M Shack is one of the Medures’ several culinary concepts that include Matthew’s Restaurant, Restaurant Medure, Rue Saint-Marc, Midtown Table, M Brothers and Zest.
