The Young Lawyers Section of The Jacksonville Bar Association will host its annual Charity Chili Cook-off in less than a week and this year we are spicing things up.

The YLS is bringing chili, charity and community together 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the famed Riverside Arts Market under the canopy of the Fuller Warren Bridge.

This year’s event will feature 20 teams ready to battle it out for seven coveted awards: spiciest chili, meatiest chili, best fixins, most original, best cornbread, crowd favorite and best overall.

Each team will be judged by a panel of local judges. We also have unofficially awarded the best team name to “You Hungry, We Cook” and the Law Offices of Ron Sholes.

While sponsorship and team registration are closed, you can still show your support by attending the event and enjoying all it has to offer.

As with previous years, there will be beer, hot chocolate, desserts and live music to complement the chili you will enjoy. There also will be face-painting and other entertainment for the kids, so bring your whole family.

The YLS is committed to ensuring that the Chili Cook-off benefits the Jacksonville community.

Although this is a free event, we are seeking donations to support Friends of Jacksonville Animals. The group is a local nonprofit that works with Jacksonville’s Animal Care and Protective Services to benefit the lives of shelter animals by focusing on fundraising to assist with medical care, enrich the shelter environment, promote adoptions and reduce euthanasia.

Did we mention Friends of Jacksonville Animals is hosting an adoption event at the Chili Cook-off?

Make sure to mark your calendars and come hang out with the YLS under the Fuller Warren on Saturday. Hopefully there is a team that is ready to take on the reigning champs, Tanner Bishop, and Helen Peacock’s secret family recipe.

This event is always a great success, thanks to the generosity of Jacksonville’s legal community. This year, the YLS would like to thank our very generous sponsors: Gunster (Five-Alarm Sponsor); Thames, Markey, Heekin, P.A. (Chili Sponsor); The Law Offices of Ron Sholes (Chili Sponsor); and Milam Howard Nicandri Dees & Gillam, P.A. (Chili Sponsor).

If the Chili Cook-off wasn’t enough to get you excited, this week is jam-packed with YLS activities.

On Thursday, the YLS is hosting a charity poker tournament at bestbet Jacksonville to benefit the HEAL Foundation. The foundation is a local nonprofit that serves individuals and families living with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

The event starts at 5 p.m. with poker lessons, cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Tournament play will run from 6:15-8:45 p.m.

There will be plenty of awards and even some local celebrity bounties, including Hank Coxe, Steve Grossman, John Delaney and Matt Schellenberg.

So if you think you have the skills to knock out Hank Coxe or if you are like me and need a cheat sheet to play, check out our website at bit.ly/JBApoker for more information.
