VyStar Credit Union was approved for more than $7.1 million in renovations and power support at the Downtown tower it intends to occupy this year.

The city issued permits Tuesday for more than $3.3 million in renovations on 13 floors of the 23-story building and almost $3.8 million for backup generators and fuel tanks in the neighboring parking garage to serve the tower.

Dana B. Kenyon Co. is the contractor.

Jacksonville-based VyStar paid $59 million for the SunTrust Tower at 76 S. Bay St. and is renovating it for its headquarters. The building will become VyStar Tower.

SunTrust will move into the nearby Bank of America Tower.

VyStar President and CEO Brian Wolfburg said previously the total remodel will cover 195,000 to 200,000 square feet of space over 16 floors at the 358,278-square-foot tower. VyStar also will open a branch office.

VyStar expects to move about 900 employees Downtown by year-end.
