The city issued a building permit Sept. 3 for Robins & Morton to construct a surgery department expansion at Memorial Hospital’s campus on University Boulevard.

Memorial Hospital is adding 24,663 square feet at a cost of $15.5 million. It will expand the existing emergency department with five operating rooms, with two for cardiovascular procedures.

It also will include the renovation of two post-anesthesia care units and the addition of staff locker rooms and lounge.

The expansion will be on a single floor. It will be built on a parking lot, along an existing wall south of the emergency room entrance. Memorial Hospital is at 3625 University Blvd. S.

The new surgical rooms will allow Memorial to designate one of its existing operating rooms as a robotic surgical suite.

It is expected to be completed in October 2021, following delays from COVID-19.

“As the community’s grown, we are growing with it,” Memorial Hospital COO Cory Darling said in January. “I think this will really escalate our services that we’re offering to our patients.”
