City offers $1,500 repair grants for businesses vandalized during unrest

To quality, the property damage must not have otherwise been covered.

Qualifying Downtown businesses that experienced property damage from the civil unrest that followed peaceful protests May 30-June 1 can receive a grant of up to $1,500 from the city to help pay for repairs.

The Downtown Businesses Financial Assistance Program was announced July 15 in a news release. Business owners can request a grant application by emailing [email protected]

Here are the qualifications:

• The business must be located Downtown.

• Applicants must demonstrate an impact of property damages or vandalism that occurred May 30- June 1.

• Applicants must own the building or show the business is responsible for property repairs.

• Only one business may apply per address.

• Applicants must provide a copy of the police report.

• Applicants must provide copies of receipts documenting repair costs or estimates for the work to be completed.

• Property damages must not have otherwise been mitigated/covered.

Downtown Vision Inc. CEO Jake Gordon said June 1 that Downtown buildings damaged were the Jessie Ball duPont Center; the former Burro Bar; Dos Gatos; TTV Architects Inc.; The 5 & Dime Theatre Co.; First Baptist Church; and the Duval County Supervisor of Elections building.
