Mary Tappouni, president of Breaking Ground Contracting, recently received a resolution from Gov. Charlie Crist and the Governor’s Cabinet recognizing her 2009 Sustainable Florida Leadership Best Practice award for her leadership in the construction industry. The 2009 Sustainable Florida-Collins Center awards were presented in Orlando last year to recognize leaders and companies throughout the state of Florida for a variety of sustainability practices.

Tappouni (center with Crist) was recognized with the award and resolution for her vision and purpose for Breaking Ground Contracting, which is to be a leader in environmental sustainability in the construction industry — an industry which is seen by many as prime contributor of trash and degradation to the natural world.

“Our company has become a model for green building and living through the promotion of education, community service and practical applications for individuals and businesses,” said Tappouni. “I am honored to receive this award from Sustainable Florida and resolution from Gov. Crist — it reminds us how important our mission is to create a better world through green, sustainable practices.”

Breaking Ground Contracting’s staff size has increased 200 percent since 2007 and it is ranked ninth in the region’s list of Fastest Growing Companies according to the Jacksonville Business Journal. Tappouni was also selected as the 2009 Florida State Small Business Person of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration.
