Edward Waters College is establishing a new Honors College that will help recruit and retain highly qualified students.

The program is supported by a $100,000 grant from the Jessie Ball duPont Fund.

It is one of 24 awards totaling $1.6 million approved in January by the nonprofit’s board of trustees.

The Honors College will recruit academically outstanding undergraduates from across the U.S. who will be enrolled as President’s Scholars.

Select students will be part of a four-year residential program that will include research, internships and travel opportunities.

The Honors College will provide a “more rigorous curriculum that fosters continued academic success and mentors students into graduate programs and job placement,” according to a news release from the duPont Fund.

“This new program will have a positive student and community impact, help maintain competitive faculty members and strengthen the health of the college,” said Katie Ensign, senior program officer for the fund, in the release.
