Hwy 55 Burgers, Shakes & Fries, a 31-year-old North Carolina chain, applied for a permit to build its first Jacksonville area restaurant at 6707 Commonwealth Ave. at an estimated $700,000.

The site is east of Interstate 295 in west Duval County.

The 2,490-square-foot restaurant is planned on 1 acre.

Area developer and franchisee Jeremy Bond said in October his group has the rights to open locations in Georgia and North Florida.

He has two Georgia Hwy 55 restaurants in Kingsland and Waycross  that came with the territory.

Bond said he expected groundbreaking early this year for a third-quarter opening of the West Jacksonville restaurant.

He expects 15 to 20 inside tables and six to eight on the patio.

A JEA service availability report shows that Hwy 55 plans to build a 2,453-square-foot restaurant on 1.1 acres at northeast Commonwealth Avenue and Danmac Lane, east of Suemac Road.

“I have a lot of other locations in North Florida and South Georgia in the works, and one under construction in Brunswick,” Bond said.

Hwy 55 is a table-service brand started by Kenney Moore as Andy’s Cheesesteaks & Cheeseburgers. The chain is based in Mount Olive, North Carolina, east of Fayetteville.

The menu items include burgers; cheesesteaks; chicken cheesesteaks and sandwiches; shrimp burgers and po’boys; salads; hot dogs; BLTs; grilled cheese; platters; kids’ meals; sides; and frozen custard, sundaes, shakes and floats.

The hwy55.com website says the chain has more than 130 open-grill diners across eight Southeastern states.
