J.C. Penney Co. Inc. announced May 20 it is reopening 12 more Florida stores, but it still has only one of its three Jacksonville area stores open.

The company, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization May 15, reopened its store at The Avenues mall on Jacksonville's Southside last week.

Its stores at Regency Square Mall and the Orange Park Mall have not reopened since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

The additional openings bring the total number of open stores in Florida to 17. J.C. Penney had 52 Florida stores operating in February.

The company is planning to permanently close about 30% of its 846 stores across the country in its Chapter 11 restructuring, but it has not announced specific locations or timing.
