Public education on the way to next level

City Year 2013 in Jacksonville officially began Friday when 58 AmeriCorps members made a commitment to complete a 10-month tour of duty in six Duval County middle and high schools. They will serve as tutors, mentors and role models to keep students in school and on track for graduation. “This program brings our community together to give our children a brighter future. I see every reason to be optimistic about the future of education in Jacksonville,” said Mayor Alvin Brown, who administered the oath of induction to the participants. City Year Opening Day is sponsored locally by CSX Corp. and nationally by Comcast-NBC Universal.
