• Talk of a Publix in San Marco is heating up again. The Sembler Co., has a contract to buy property in San Marco to develop stores, offices and housing at Hendricks Avenue and Atlantic Boulevard. The company also developed Market Square in Riverside, which is anchored by Publix.

• Starting Tuesday, the Duval Federal Credit Union branch in the courthouse will only be open Tuesday and Thursday instead of five days a week. And regular customers should say goodbye to Lila Gayton, who is retiring Friday after 24 years with Duval Federal.

• Comedian Jerry Seinfeld is coming back in December. You’ll recall his last visit here was originally set for Sept. 12, 2001, and that was canceled due to the terrorist attack. He made it up later that year.

• Another popular act returning this fall is The Moody Blues. They’ll perform Nov. 4 at the Florida Theatre.

• Volunteers in Medicine-Jax is hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony Sept. 12 from 4-6 p.m. at its new facility at 41 E. Duval St.

• Mayor John Peyton will sign over the lease for the Landing to Toney Sleiman today. Mayor’s office spokesperson Heather Murphy said Sleiman will take the next few months to identify what he needs to make the shopping center viable before possibly requesting changes to the agreement.

• In addition to pay raises for City employees, Professional Association of City Employees president Jack Daniels said he will seek increases in hazard pay and an appeal process for workers who are proclaimed “not fit for duty” by City doctors. Collective bargaining between the City and PACE has been underway for about a month.

• The commanders of military facilities in and around Jacksonville will meet Wednesday with Mayor Peyton as they try to avoid being included in the next, and last, round of the Base Realignment And Closure process. The impact of all the bases on the City’s economy is estimated at $7.5 billion a year.

• The library is hosting two discussions of “Fahrenheit 451,” the book selected for the JaxReads program. The sessions will be held at the Haydon Burns Library on Sept. 8 and 11 at noon.

• City employees were called to safety meetings early Wednesday morning and reminded what precautions to take when the mercury soars. High on the list, particularly for Public Works employees who spend most of the day in the heat, was to drink plenty of liquids.
