WHAT DOES HE DO?
“We provide a variety of services by way of financial, estate and business planning. Our biggest thing is that we handle The Florida Bar members’ benefits, insurance and retirement programs as we have for the past 15 years.” He added that his company is responsible for developing different, exclusive plans on behalf of The Florida Bar.
FAMILY AFFAIR
Business Planning Concepts, Inc. was started by Nick’s father. His grandfather also worked in the insurance field for many years. “I wasn’t handed anything, though. When I first started, I was thrown into the water just like anyone else. I really had to test myself.”
BIGGEST INFLUENCE?
“I’m not easily influenced. I don’t like the idea of following another person. I want to develop my own ideals. I will say this, though, I learned everything I know about business from my dad.”
WHAT DOES HE DO IN HIS SPARE TIME?
He enjoys listening to music, playing the guitar — he’s been playing for four years — golfing and working out. “I work out everyday. It’s important to me to stay in shape.”
THE NICKLAUS CONNECTION
Nick is actually short for Nicklaus, as in Jack Nicklaus. “My dad is an avid golfer. He always admired Jack Nicklaus. And around the time I was born, he was at the top of his game. My mom wrote a letter to him explaining how much my whole family really admired his character and, obviously, the way he played golf. While my dad was working at the TPC he slipped the letter in his locker.” Later, Nicklaus sent Trefry a teddy bear, which he still has today.
HIS FAVORITE SPORT?
“Baseball. I enjoy golfing, but I never really got into it.” Trefry played catcher while attending Bishop Kenny High School and later at the University of Florida.
LONG TERM PLAN?
“I really want to help my father make this organization grow.” Currently, Business Planning Concepts, Inc. is statewide. Trefry would like to see it go national.
ANYTHING YOU
DON’T LIKE?
“I have to say that I’m bothered by people’s negative attitude towards people in the insurance industry. It’s all based on preconceptions that aren’t always true. Here, everyone is honest and ethical.”
KEY TO SUCCESS
“You have to want to be successful. It’s like my father says: ‘You’re not going to be successful if you’re knocking down the door at five to go home.’ You have to do whatever it takes.”
