• W.O. Birchfield, of counsel with Lewis Longman & Walker, and Bruce B. Humphrey, a senior associate at the firm, are leaving to form Birchfield & Humphrey P.A. The new firm will practice in the areas of property rights, eminent domain and land use. Until Jan. 1, the firm will be located at 841 Prudential Dr., at which time it will relocate to 1031 LaSalle St.

• The Florida Department of Transportation is replacing the landscaping along I-95 from downtown to the Baymeadows area at a cost of $1.7 million. According to FDOT spokesperson Mike Goldman, City Council member Suzanne Jenkins and the mayor’s office raised some concerns about the landscaping and asked that it be redone. Goldman said the original landscaping was planted by the road contractor, which led to some of the problems. The FDOT now uses landscaping contractors for all of its road projects.

• The Hart Bridge will be closed Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. for the bridge lighting project.

• Replacing Miami Subs with a Burger King at the airport is proving to be a wise decision. The airport Burger King is the highest grossing franchise in town and setting sales records on a daily basis. Also at the airport, the new terrazzo floor, which was designed by a student at Douglas Anderson, is finished and part of the walkway to Concourse B should open today.

The reason? The state’s open records laws require negotiations — including salary — to be public record. That sometimes spooks candidates employed by other cities who don’t want their names in headlines.

• The Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (FACDL) has formed a Public Information and Relations committee. FACDL’s goal is to provide up-to-the-minute information for Florida residents, concerning their criminal justice system.
