When Cannon Architecture went looking for new Jacksonville offices, the firm’s leadership chose the Elks building for its historic character and modern conveniences. Just two weeks away from a Dec. 18 move-in, contractors are hard at work bringing together the old and new on Laura Street between Monroe and Adams.

When the New York design firm makes the move from Independent Square, it will move into 7,900 square feet of completely renovated office space. Cannon principal and regional director Joe Calvarese said about $500,000 has been spent to improve the offices, but reminders of the historic Elks Club still linger. A clock above a third floor fireplace is still set to the club’s meeting time, and the 80-year-old building’s original cast-iron ceiling vents are visible through uplit skylights.

After 10 years in Independent Square, Cannon made the move to give its growing staff more room. Cannon plans to expand its local staff from 22 employees to 30 within a year of the move. Cannon also has the option to expand further. The firm has first option on another 1,200 square feet inside the building.
