• The Florida Hurricane Disaster Relief Fund was established by Governor Jeb Bush to financially assist residents who were impacted by the 2004 hurricanes money was contributed by individual and group donations throughout the state, nation and world. Of these monies, $35,000 has been allocated to Duval County to help residents with continuing unmet needs as a direct result of these natural disasters. • What school teaches more active military than any other? Florida Community College at Jacksonville says it does and has plenty of evidence to back it including the list of courses for the active Navy members, who can get online degrees. It’s all coordinated through the Military Education Institute, the newest branch of the rapidly-expanding school.
• Twenty-five lucky youngsters will receive tickets to Sunday’s Jaguar game as a reward for participating in “Akin’s Reading and Rec Club.” Jaguars Linebacker Akin Ayodele and Jacksonville’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Entertainment sponsor the club, which promotes literacy and recreation. In November, participants were asked to read a book and submit a book report. Of the more than 200 children participating, 25 were selected to receive tickets. The children and Parks staff will attend the game following a special tailgate party at Kids Kampus.
