• Among the upcoming topics of discussion between City Council president Elaine Brown and Mayor John Peyton is what to do with the Haydon Burns Library once the new Main Library opens later this year.
• Today’s JEDC meeting will provide a forum for all the commission’s advisory subcommittees to catch up on each other’s progress in revamping the City’s business development. JEDC spokesperson Jean Moyer said the final recommendations should be ready by the Aug. 12 commission meeting. The commissioners will vote on which recommendations should be passed on to Mayor Peyton, who will make the final decision on changes.
• After six months of haggling with the Public Works Department, Magnificat Cafe owner Benoit Desclefs got the City out last weekend to trim branches from a Monroe Street tree that had been clogging his gutters. Just one problem, the City’s bucket truck smashed one of his windows.
• City Council member Reggie Fullwood is taking the lead on LaVilla redevelopment. Following a meeting with Mayor Peyton last week, Fullwood is exploring a preliminary budget and funding streams needed to jump start the project.
• A bonus CLE seminar on Sanction II training will be held Aug. 18 and/or 19 at the FCCJ Kent Campus computer labs. The seminar has been set up by the Northeast Florida Paralegal Association. Participants will be trained in the introductory and intermediate level hands-on computer courses. Each seminar is limited to 20 seats. For reservations, call 381-3589.
• Looking for a cool way to beat the latest heat wave? Dreyer’s Ice Cream will be giving away free ice cream at the Landing today, Saturday and Sunday as part of the annual Spirit of the ADA celebration. There’ll be a parade from Hemming Plaza to the Landing on Saturday to commemorate the Americans With Disabilities Act.
