A plot of vacant land near the Museum of Science & History on the Southbank may have some new artwork by the end of the year. Stiltwalkers, a limited edition bronze sculpture depicting children on stilts, is the desired piece.
City Council member Reggie Fullwood filed legislation this week to spend a portion of Better Jacksonville Plan funds on the project. The remainder of the costs will come from the Council’s special reserve account and the City’s Tree Protection & Related Expenses Trust Fund.
“I think it would be a really wonderful addition on the Southbank,” said Fullwood. “In many ways, it captures the essence of what MOSH is all about.”
Fullwood said the land, a roundabout at the intersection of Museum Drive and San Marco Boulevard, is currently “very unattractive.”
“There’s nothing there now and the City’s Traffic and Engineering Department is already on board with this, so I can’t think of any reason why this wouldn’t go through,” he said. “It could have a great impact there.”
Stiltwalkers, which was chosen by representatives from MOSH, including its president Margo Dundon, should be in place before the Super Bowl in February.
“That’s my goal because all of the tourists that will in Jacksonville at that time will be able to see it, too,” said Fullwood.
Only 12 Stiltwalkers sculptures have been produced. Jacksonville would get the final sculpture, making it the only Florida installation site.
“In addition to being visually stunning,” said Dundon, “the theme is highly compatible with the museum’s audience and mission. It is also reflective of this City’s commitment to
children.”
