• Linda Whipple, a senior paralegal at Spohrer, Wilner, Maxwell & Matthews, has been named “Outstanding Member of the Year” by the Northeast Florida Paralegal Association (NEFPA). Whipple, NEFPA’s first vice president, organized a mock trial at the U.S. Courthouse at Jacksonville that involved local attorneys and federal judges. “Linda definitely stands out among Jacksonville area paralegals because she is a serious-minded visionary who goes far above and beyond expectations, making a greater contribution to the paralegal profession than one could reasonably expect,” said Margaret Costa, NEFPA’s president.
• Pre-sales at the Adams Street Station, 25 restored railcars located near Alltel Stadium, are underway. Construction has also started and is expected to be complete by January.
• If there’s one thing City Council member Pat Lockett-Felder hates, it’s when someone tries to do things in her district without telling her first. That’s exactly what someone was trying to do when they attempted to change a zoning code near the Arlington Expressway. The offending party told Council member Sharon Copeland, who chairs the Land Use and Zoning Committee, they had Lockett-Felder’s blessing. “I don’t know why they would deliberately lie to you,” Lockett-Felder told Copeland.
• Vestcor chair John Rood told Mayor John Peyton in a letter that he’s enjoying his new job as ambassador to the Bahamas, but Rood did have one complaint. “I’m enjoying myself, but do wish the storms would slow down!” he wrote, referring to the recent wave of hurricanes that have hit the Bahamas and Jacksonville.
• The Jacksonville Historical Society is hosting a “treasure hunt” Nov. 18 at the site of the new Duval County Courthouse. Member of the JHS will be digging to to find buried items. County Court Judge Gary Flower is leading the dig, which begins at 8:30 a.m.
• Three local chefs have been inducted into The International Who’s Who of Chefs. Matthew Medure of Matthew’s in San Marco, Adam Markowitz of The Wine Cellar, and David Lockwood of the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club are among almost 3,000 of the best chefs from 70 countries selected.
