• Terrorism, dispute resolution and the rule of law are just a few of the topics to be examined at the Legal and Policy Issues in the Americas Conference, hosted May 15-17 by the Center for Governmental Responsibility at the University of Florida’s law school.

Lawyers, scholars and law enforcement officials from across the Western Hemisphere will gather in Gainesville to discuss pressing legal and policy issues facing the United States and its neighbors in North and South America.

Speakers will include Former Florida Gov. Kenneth “Buddy” McKay, special envoy of the Americas in the Clinton Administration; Dennis Jett, dean of UF’s International Center and former United States Ambassador to Peru; Peter German, director general of the Financial Crimes Division of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police; George Henry Millard, police chief of São Paolo State in Brazil; and Alan Lambert, consultant for the British Foreign and Commonwealth Offices Anti-Money-Laundering Program. • The Law Firm of Smith, Hulsey and Busey welcomed several new faces to its downtown office. Charles Beard, David Burns, Eric Ensminger, J. Rice Ferrelle, Eric McKay and Elizabeth Schule have joined the firm as associates. Charles Keller has become a member.

• The Stetson University College of Law is continuing its Elder Consumer Protection Program this week in Jacksonville. The program is designed to alert the elderly about the threat of identity theft, telemarketing fraud and other scams. The sessions are part of a statewide program headed by Rebecca Morgan, the Boston Asset Management Faculty Chair in Elder Law at Stetson. Chris Cox, the school’s elder consumer protection fellow, will make presentations April 18 at 11 a.m. at the J.S. Johnson Community Center, and April 19 at the Riverview Community Center.

• The Jacksonville Chapter of the Federal Bar Association has released its agenda for the second annual Honorable Ralph W. “Buddy” Nimmons, Jr. Federal Practice Seminar, scheduled for Wednesday, April 20 at the federal courthouse. Registration is scheduled for 8 a.m. followed by a review of the year in criminal sentencing. One-hour seminars on summary judgments and motions and hearings follow, all leading up to a State of the Middle District of Florida address during lunch.
