• The City and the Chamber are partnering to expand international business development opportunities. It’s part of the reorganization of the Jacksonville Economic Development Commission and the City will kick in $100,000, plus assign staffer Nancy Olson to work in the Chamber building. A separate non-profit named the Jacksonville International Business Coalition will be created and will have a 15-person board led by the mayor and composed of top officials here who deal in international trade.

• Former Mayor Hans Tanzler is seriously ill after having part of a leg amputated due to a blood clot. Complications have set in. Tanzler was the City’s first mayor under Consolidation, serving from 1968-79.

• Tommy Hazouri may once again be an elected official as a School Board member, but it really has been a long time — 14 years — since he has been mayor. But, he’s still getting mail at City Hall. This time from a chief at the Department of Environmental Protection in Tallahassee.

• Another year, another birthday bash for the folks at daniel. This year’s 121st celebration is a hoedown at the daniel campus on Belfort Road on May 12. The Florida-Georgia Blood Alliance will also be having a blood drive during the day-long event.

• In a rare move, two Council committees will meet jointly. Monday, the Finance and Recreation & Community Development committees will meet as one to discuss the Shipyards property and pending deal with LandMar.

• A very odd delivery showed up in several Council member offices Tuesday night. It was a letter from the editor of The Epoch Times (the return address was from Tampa) and a copy of the book, “Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party.” What caused a stir, though, was who made the delivery and how they made it to the fourth floor after hours.

• Apologies to City Council President Elaine Brown. We incorrectly reported that she would be attending Jacksonville Day in Tallahassee.

• It’ll cost a pretty penny — a little over $85,000 — for our local leaders to attend this year’s Governor’s Hurricane Conference. Those who go will also attend the Emergency Management Academy. This is all in preparation for the statewide hurricane exercise in early May. The State of Florida’s five-year strategic plan requires attendance at such conferences.

• Tennis, anyone? Firehouse Subs is sponsoring a men’s doubles tennis tournament May 20-22 at Deerwood Country Club to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. It’s open to all level of players and we hear Saturday’s party is a good time. Following Sunday’s finals matches, Firehouse will present a check for $100,000 to MDA.
