University of Florida Levin College of Law

• Thanks to the spam epidemic on the Internet, UF students will no longer be allowed to forward e-mails from the school’s Gatorlink e-mail system to third-party addresses after Oct. 1, 2005. According to a recent law school publication, students often miss out on important messages from UF professors and departments because many e-mail providers have spam-blocking software that filters out e-mails from the university. Students will now only be able to forward e-mails from the Gatorlink system to addresses ending in .ufl.edu.

Stetson University College of Law

• Stetson’s College of Law is nearing the final stages of construction for the first “elder-friendly, high-tech courtroom” in the country. The new courtroom, which is located on the school’s Gulfport campus, is designed to increase courtroom access to the elderly and disabled. It uses technology including flat-screen monitors, hearing amplification devices and a “multi-lingual software speech synthesizer that will read aloud words displayed on a computer screen, translate them into multiple languages, and even output words to refreshable Braille displays if needed,” according to a press release from the school. The “barrier-free courtroom” is a joint effort of Stetson’s Centers for Excellence in Advocacy and Elder Law and will be dedicated Sept. 16, 2005, in honor of Stetson professor Emeritus William R. Eleazer.
