• The Chamber is jumping on the Cecil Field bandwagon. Not only did they urge their members to attend Tuesday night’s City Council meeting and voice their support of Cecil becoming a Navy base again, they have also encouraged everyone to write a letter to the editor of the Times-Union.
• Bring your own water, towel and a mat to “Yoga on the River” at 9:30 a.m. Saturday during City Market Saturday’s. The YMCA is donating their time to bring this to City Market Saturday’s. Karen Barnes, director of promotions at Downtown Vision Inc. said they are hoping to make this an ongoing event.
• Another big political fundraiser has been organized. This one’s for Sen. Mel Martinez next Wednesday at the home of Deb and Clay Cornett. No minimum contribution, but there is a $2,100 maximum. Invite only.
• Sports Illustrated has put out a fantasy football guide. Jaguar quarterback Byron Leftwich and wide receiver Reggie Williams are considered “must haves” while running back Fred Taylor is listed as a “just say no.”
• JEA often talks about its lowest-in-the-state electric rates, but keeping them at that level isn’t a goal for the utility. “People ask if it’s a goal to have the lowest rates in Florida, and that’s not a goal that we have,” JEA CEO Jim Dickenson told the Council last week. JEA’s goal is to provide the best service to a growing community, he said. However, he pointed out that JEA’s rates are currently the cheapest and expected to stay there for a while.
• Given all the press attention the green algae slick clouding the St. Johns River has received in recent weeks, you might be surprised to learn that a “Blue/Green Algae” dietary supplement is available over the counter at the Riverside Publix.
• Matt Jackson, City Council member Reggie Fullwood’s assistant, has resigned. He has accepted a position with the law firm of Brennan, Manna & Diamond, where he starts Sept. 2.
• Parents with kids entering kindergarten next fall can help them get an early jump on their literacy skills by enrolling them in Mayor John Peyton’s Book Club. Enrollment is Sept. 10 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the following area branch libraries: Highlands, San Marco, Pablo Creek, University Park and Webb Wesconnett.
• The Jacksonville Sea & Sky Spectacular, hosted by Jacksonville Beach, is Nov. 4-6. The highlights this year include the Blue Angels and an outdoor showing of “Top Gun” at the Seawalk Pavilion on Nov. 4.
