Just in time for the Feb. 15 Special Election, the Supervisor of Elections Office hosted about a dozen middle school students Tuesday morning to show them how votes are counted.

Visiting from Trinity Christian and Riverside Presbyterian Day School, the students filled out mock ballots, took them over to voting machines and, later, visited the Office’s Equipment Center on Superior Street.

Interim Supervisor Bill Scheu said later that he was happy to show the students how the voting process works.

“I think it’s important to educate people about the importance of voting as early as possible,” he said. “I don’t think you can stress enough that every vote counts.”

The Special Election will fill the post Scheu now temporarily holds as well as two open City Council offices.

Scheu was made the interim supervisor by Gov. Jeb Bush after the health-related resignation of John Stafford, and the City Council offices opened up because their holders — Jerry Holland and Faye Rustin — are running for the elections post.
