UNF has family business forum

The second annual Family and Closely Held Business Forum will be held on Friday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the University of North Florida’s University Center.

An estimated 90 percent of American businesses are family owned and closely held and face distinct challenges in managing growth and succession.

Among the speakers will be Herb Peyton, the founder and president of the Gate Petroleum Co., one of the state’s largest family-owned companies which includes land development and resort management as well as 150 service stations/convenience stores in seven states.

The forum’s topics include “Creating a Leadership,” “How Successful Leaders Consolidate Authority in the Family Enterprise,” “How to Recruit and Retain Top-Tier Talent,” “Finding and Attracting Non-Bank Capital” and “Challenges of Growing a Family Business.”

A panel discussion featuring Paul Robbins and Kelley Reed of Caribbean Shipping Services, Delores Kesler and Deborah Pass of ATS Services Inc. and Rob and E.J. Taylor of Medical Services Company.

Speakers include Ivan Lansberg, a senior partner with Lansberg, Gersick and Associates; attorney Steven B. Lapidus of Greenberg Traurig; George F. Norton, senior partner with Heidrick & Struggles International; Rick Rosen, managing director of H.I.G. Capital; Mickey Block, chairman of Darifair Foods

The cost is $150 per person. The registration fee includes continental breakfast, a seated luncheon, coffee breaks and the book “Succeeding Generations: Realizing the Dream of Families in Business.”
