Juvenile justice tour announced

State Attorney Harry Shorstein announced last week the date for the annual summer tour of Jacksonville’s juvenile justice system. This year’s tour will be held Friday, July 22 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. The tour is held annually to give high risk juveniles a chance to talk with prosecutors and incarcerated juveniles and to see the inner workings of teen court and the Duval County jail. Parents or legal guardians are required to accompany their children on the tour. For more information about this year’s tour, contact B.J. Laster at 630-2075.

New charity license plate

The Florida Bar has come out with a new specialty license plate to help needy Florida children. For a $25 donation, the “Kids Deserve Justice” specialty license plate will help raise funds to provide legal assistance to needy children in the state. The tags are now available though the Florida Bar’s web site, floridabar.org, or most county tag offices.

Florida Bar’s updated web site

Though it has some trouble early on, the Florida Bar’s web site is up, running and better than ever. Besides having a new, cleaner look, the web site offers Bar members new features like the ability to pay Bar dues online. The site also offers a free legal research engine through Fastcase for all members of the Florida Bar.

Moving

It wasn’t all hot dogs and fireworks for one firm last weekend. Neils Murphy and Geddes Anderson of Murphy and Anderson P.A. moved to a new location over the holiday weekend. Their new office is on the eighteenth floor of the Independent Square building in suite 1801.

More paws in law

Two Florida law schools will be adding animal law classes to their course offerings this coming semester. Professor Phyllis Coleman at Nova Southeastern University will teach an animal law course and professor Steven Wise at St. Thomas Law School will be offering an “animal rights law” course beginning in the fall. Currently more than 58 law schools around the country offer courses or seminars on animal law.

Annual Bankruptcy Bar meeting coming

Plans for the Jacksonville Bankruptcy Bar Association’s annual all-day seminar are in the works. JBBA president Nina LaFleur said programs for the seminar will be printed soon. More than 150 attorneys and at least 10 judges are expected to attend the Oct. 28 event, which is the Friday before the annual Florida-Georgia football game. LaFleur said the event is always held just prior to the Florida-Georgia game. “I guess it is just tradition,” she said.

JBBA meeting venue change

Besides the annual seminar news, the Jacksonville Bankruptcy Bar Association has changed the location of its monthly meetings. While the past several meetings have been held at JMOMA, it looks like the River Club will be the new meeting place for the foreseeable future.
